Movieland Wax Museum [Júl. 25., 2008|11:44 pm]

[jewels_aqt]

Movieland was the largest wax museum in the United States. Located in California, it was one of the most popular wax museums in United States for decades. Allen Parkinson founded the museum on May 4, 1962 on October 31, 2005, after forty-three years in business and 10 million visitors, Movieland closed.

They put a StarBucks right in front of the giant empty building.  Someone said they are turning the old big building into a BestBuy.  I hope they dont take down the sign.

i really don't know if i can bottle up my disgust right now and post it in this bulletin but i suppose i will do my best because i'm sure there are plenty of others that share this same feeling.

first and foremost the cops had no right to explode into beech creek rec center as if they were busting into a meth lab which had a giant sign above the door that read "meth 4 sale". i really think cops or well, the manchester city police, underestimate the minds of teenagers and "kids in black shirts". believe it or not we still have rights and just because they have a badge and a gun we are supposed to fear them and assume they know what they are talking about simply because they're "higher authority".

i'm sorry but i've been to plenty of shows where people have indeed been arrested however was the entire show canceled? no. when you have a show open to the entire public, allowing whoever that wishes to enter and pay to come in then you are not held responsible to search that person and make sure they do not have drugs in their system or in their possession. the people hosting this show tonight had absolutely no clue what was going on when our city's wonderful jeff culver decided to announce to everyone the show was canceled. if steven duff was the one sitting behind the table handing out free alcohol to kids or offering lines of coke i could understand this whole ordeal. however, he wasn't and was actually with his family. there was even a sign on the door as you walked in that explained they were not held responsible for accidents or whatever else.

this city and it's authorities are truly more two-faced than any other place on this planet. our very own mayor screams that she stands for "youth acceptance" and trying to make the city better for the kids to keep them off drugs and the streets but when this show was called off those cops just opened the door for so many worse-case scenarios. i would much rather have those kids in one area banging into each and having a safe, enjoyable, and DRUG-FREE time than spread out all over clay county passed out with their parents calling ordering for the cops to search for them.

after reading this twice i still feel as if my point has not been established. to put it more simpler i am trying to say the cops had no right to cancel a show because some of the people that were attending it had drugs in their possession. they should have just gotten rid of the bad and let the good continue to exist and go as they please but instead they ruin it for everyone.

as one person nothing will be done about this, but as an entire group some sort of ground can be established. we should not let anyone run over us simply because they say they can. question their authority, let them know you're confused as to why you're getting pushed to your cars, and most of all do it in a respectful and intelligent manner. when a cop thinks you know your rights and you know what he's doing is wrong trust me he'll start remembering police academy very quick like. come monday morning, carmen lewis will definitely hear from me and i suggest she receive more than just my call.

I believe in seitan. I've made several batches at home and never had it prepared by anyone other than me.
SO...How do I make it not taste
1. rubbery
2. hard and rubbery
3. like chewy bread.

I have boiled it= super rubbery
I have made the seitan o greatness log= really hard and still bready and rubbery
And then I baked it for a while and grilled it and it tasted eh...like chewy bread

Am I missing something or is it just not supposed to taste good?

[Tónlist |daft punk]

(This is probably an old question/query, sorry.) On TV the other day it was mentioned that some brands of frozen chips are cooked in beef tallow. Ew? Some quick googling shows that a couple of years ago McDonald's had to pay out vegetarian and Hindu groups for cooking their fries in beef tallow, so it's (or has been) a widespread industry practise. Does this mean all delicious, hot, salty, greasy chips are off-limits because they might be cooked in rendered animal fat? :( Are fast-food french fries commonly considered non-vegan?

These pictures are of an abandoned home in the town of Naguabo, Puerto Rico.

The home used to be in better (less bad) condition a few years ago, but my guess is that recent hurricanes have worn it down (all of the wooden roof is gone) . The house is right next to the Caribbean Sea and I'm certain the views from the rooms are incredible.

When I was little this house used to scare me but now I find it quite beautiful and interesting.  I really wished I knew more about this home but sadly I dont. :(

sqool classes what I hopes to take maybe someday [Júl. 25., 2008|09:33 pm]

deadletters
I need 12 credits. I'm hoping to get four of these classes. I'm still trying to decide between the two psych courses. All of these classes are at night, so I'm still going to be working the day tour.

Introduction to Media Studies NCOM3000
Students explore media history and the basic concepts used in media analysis, spanning the history of technologies from the magic lantern to multimedia and stressing the relationship between media and their social, political, and economic contexts. Since media are at once technology, art, entertainment, and business enterprises, they need to be studied from a variety of disciplinary perspectives. The readings for this course reflect this multifaceted approach and draw attention to the work of key thinkers and theorists in the field. Examples are drawn primarily from the visual media of commercial film, television, advertising, video, and the Internet, although alternative media practices are noted also. The aim is to understand how media texts are constructed, convey meaning, and shape each other in significant ways.
(3 credits)

Visual Sociology: Seeing like a Sociologist NSOC3842
Visual sociology is more than the production of images. We explore how sociologists critically describe, interpret, and represent the social worlds they observe. Students both produce visual images and analyze the visual artifacts (films, videos, photographs, advertisements and other images) of their social worlds. We approach the course as an intense skill-building exercise designed to develop and sharpen the critical sociological "vision." We explore the often taken for- granted spaces, places, and images we encounter everyday. A camera is required, but previous photography
experience is not necessary. (3 credits)

Linguistic Anthropology: Building Selves and Social Relations through Speech, Story, and Song NANT3300
We often think of language as simply a means for expressing ideas and exchanging information. However, as we move through our daily lives, we use language to construct and negotiate who we are, how we relate to other people, and how we fit into institutions and other social structures. In this course, we explore the powerful role that communication (and miscommunication!) plays in the formation of gender dynamics, class relations, ethno-racial identities, cultural institutions, and national boundaries. Through ethnographic readings and our own observations, we find that face-to-face talk is often intertwined with other modes and media of communication, such as radio and television broadcasts, written texts, internet discourse, and spontaneous or recorded song. This course helps students to think critically about the ongoing processes of learning to use language and constructing social and cultural differences through language use. (3 credits)

Cognitive Psychology NPSY3601
Ordinary mental activities such as recognizing a word, forgetting a phone number, or distinguishing a cup from a glass seem transparently simple. Examined more closely, they are complex and not easily explained. Cognitive psychology is the empirical study of longstanding questions about what we know, how we know it, and how our knowledge is structured, accessed, and used. We start with the psychology of William James, which examines how we experience thought and feeling. With that background, we examine the theory, research, and methods of contemporary cognitive psychology. We consider attention, perception, memory, the structure of knowledge, language, reasoning, problem solving, and cognitive neuroscience. (3 credits)

Introduction to Visual Perception NPSY3816
Why do we see what we see? This course introduces the fundamentals of visual perception and examines the major contributions to the field throughout its history and their relevance to the world we live in. We discuss the questions that the pioneers in the field addressed: How do we perceive shape, color, distance, size, and light? Are we born able to perceive, or do we learn how? What does it mean to pay attention, and what do we perceive while we are not paying attention? Why does the moon always appear larger when it is seen on the horizon than when it is above us in the sky? We examine various visual illusions and perceptual phenomena and discuss how and why they work. Students are introduced to current research in visual perception and are encouraged to develop their own investigative questions and the methods with which to answer them. (3 credits)

I thought it was about time to pass the word that I have not fallen off the edge of the world and I shall have photos to post soon. That being said, I wanted to offer some site updates and the transient nature of some of the sites we hold dear. Prior to departing for northern Alabama, I’d planned to write an update on some locations I’ve explored either solo or with companions. Rather than consider it a post-script on my activities in southern California, I look at it was a review.

Originally, I’d planned to make this a in multiple updates on old sites, but in review, I’ll merely hide the stories and photos behind a cut. Subjects covered: the Quartz Hill Golf Shop, the “Special House” in Bakersfield, the various Felicia sites, the Hawes Communications Bunker, and various Route 66 sites including The Greystone Café. All posts (references) are to my personal journal, mainly because I’m too lazy to pull of the same post I made to the community.

Changes come in shades of gray and black.. [8 images and two slide shows]  )

before my dad's dad passed away, he had a very very very young girlfriend.
i was pretty young when he died so i only vaguely remember being told that his very young girlfriend was pregnant, with what we all thought was his child.

i never heard about it again. i've remembered that all happening ever since, but its weird to have a vague memory of being a kid and finding out your grandfather had fathered another child, and then never hearing anyone mention anything about it ever again. so i never asked about it. no one talked about it.

she called today. the boy, possibly my uncle, is 9 years old now and wants to know about his brothers. y'know, my dad and brian.
when the woman called brian, he simply said he "didnt have any other brothers." he refuses to acknowledge the kid.

mom wants to find a yearbook to look him up. his mom said he looks just like a delong. mom and i want dad to try and accept all of it and meet the boy.

New layout. I'm tired of making my own.

Today was the grand-opening of ULTA here, and I got there around 10 am only to find literally 30 people in line waiting to get checked out. Which sucks because their brand was buy one get one free, and I can't resist having someone else do my make-up for a change. All the associates were spouting out things that I already knew, maybe I should be working there, but I'd rather sell Mark (cheap, and all around good quality and no animal testing) and not have to go wayyyy out on the other side of town. I did pick up some samples of Daisy by Marc Jacobs. It smells wonderful.

3 weeks until new hair!! I'm never dying my hair black ever again!

Last year I bought a bunch of dollar stuff at target for stocking stuffers and I bought a few little clutches. here's one I'm working on now. It's not very good, I free-handed it.

A clutch I'm working on.

mental health and veganism [Júl. 25., 2008|01:46 pm]

veganism

[mentallymurderd]
An omni friend of mine is considering going vegan. His reasons are that he has low energy, not a lot of motivation, and just feels gross after eating meat. I think he is looking for something to help him feel better mentally, he might be somewhat depressed. So far I've invited him to a vegan potluck this weekend, and I'm going to give him 'Diet For a New America' to read, which influenced me to become vegan. I was wondering if anyone knew of any studies, books or had any stories of thier mental wellbeing changing after switching to a vegan diet I could pass onto him.

this story is older than you [Júl. 25., 2008|02:45 pm]

deadletters
Some two hundred years ago a gentleman, who lived by himself in a large house not far from here, saw a devil in a cage when he was visiting the market: a devil with a tail, yellow skin, and two long sharp fangs-he was about the size of a large dog. The devil sat quietly in a strong bamboo cage and gnawed on a bone. Next to the cage a merchant was watching the crowd and the gentleman asked him if the devil was for sale.

"Of course," the merchant said. "Otherwise I wouldn't be here. This is an excellent devil, strong, diligent and able to do anything you want him to do. He knows how to do carpentry, he is a good gardener, he can cook, mend clothes, read you stories, chop wood, and what he doesn't know he can learn. And I don't ask much for him, if you give me 50,000 yen (50 pounds) he is yours."

The gentlemen didn't haggle and paid in cash. He wanted to take the devil home at once.

"One moment," the merchant said. "Because you haven't bargained with me I want to tell you something. Look here, he is a devil of course, and devils are no good, you know that don't you?"

"And you said he was an excellent devil." The gentleman said indignantly.

"Sure, sure," the merchant said, "And that's true as well. He is an excellent devil, but he is not good. He will always remain a devil. You have made a good buy, but only on the condition that you keep him going all the time. Every day you'll have to give him a routine, from this time to that time; you have to chop wood; and then you can start preparing the food; and after dinner you can rest for half an hour, but then you really have to die down and relax; and after that you can dig in the garden, etc., etc. If he has time to spare, if he doesn't know what to do, then he is dangerous."

"If that's all," the gentleman said, and took the devil home. And everything went beautifully. Every morning the gentleman called the devil who would kneel down obediently. The gentleman would dictate a daily program and the devil would start his chores and work right through the day. If he wasn't working he rested or played, but whatever he did, he was always obeying orders.

Than, after some months, the gentleman met an old friend in the city, and because of the sudden meeting and the thrill of seeing his old buddy again he forgot everything. He took the friend to a cafe‚ and they started drinking sake, one little stone jar after another, and then they had a very good meal and more to drink, and they landed up in the willow quarter. The ladies kept the two friends busy and our gentleman woke up in a strange room, late the next morning. At first he didn't know where he was but gradually it all came back to him and he remembered his devil. His friend had gone and he paid the bill to the women, who looked quite different now from what he remembered the previous evening, and rushed home. When he reached his garden he smelled burning and saw smoke coming from the kitchen. He stormed into his house and saw the devil sitting on the wooden kitchen floor. He had made an open fire and was roasting the neighbor's child on a spit.

What's the appeal?

I'm not tryin' to stir up trouble or arguments or anything. It's just... I love my gears. I can't imagine biking without them. It seems like it'd be a lot slower and a lot more work. But a lot of people seem to really love their fixies, so I'm honestly curious as to why. Feel free to expound with lengthy and loving detail!
